Storyline
The documentary film "two brothers - two nationalities" looks at the period from 1935 to 1959 in Czechoslovakia and Germany. The effect of social and historical processes on Germans and Czechs will be shown by means of the fate of two originally Czech brothers. One remained a Czech, the other took German citizenship and was deported to Germany. Their different personal development is exemplary for the effects on the individual as well as on whole generations, whereby the complexity of the historical processes is in the center. An attempt is also made to make clear that in the nationality question there is not only an "either-or", but a "both-as well". The film project was supported by: Deutsch-Tschechischer Zukunftsfonds, (Prag), Haus des Deutschen Ostens, (München, Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Arbeit, Familie und Soziales) und durch den Schönhengster Heimatbund.
About the film/director
Director's statement: Due to the pandemic, the structure of the film has also changed. Planned interviews could not be conducted. As a result, I had to adapt the text to the new circumstances. The idea of integrating a secretary into the film as a mediator of German-Czech history in the period 1938-1954 made it necessary to integrate her in an appropriate film setting. My film is intended to illustrate the different political and social developments in Germany and the Czech Republic by means of the biographical reappraisal of the "two Cicha brothers". Prejudices can be reduced through knowledge of history. "Two Brothers - Two Nationalities" promotes tolerance and understanding towards the "other".
