Storyline

The sun is already high in the sky when Yarê is woken up by her mother. At least the stomach pains that had been bothering the girl are gone. They were caused by the stagnant water she drank. In the sparsely populated desert between northern Syria – Kurdistan, Rojava – and Turkey, water is scarce and is traded like a luxury item.

Against this grim background, the years of discrimination that has existed against the Kurdish population, Sallar Othman tells the story of a self-confident girl’s heroic journey. On the spur of the moment, Yarê sets off for the next village with a plastic barrel. And she actually does get fresh water. But then how is she supposed to get the full 200-liter barrel home? Whether there will be a happy ending remains uncertain.

About the film/director

Sallar Othman was born in Al-Hasaka, in Rojava Kurdistan in Northern Syria. There, he founded the theater group "Koma Ararat," where he worked as an actor and director. With Koma Ararat, he staged several critical plays against the Syrian government on the streets of Al-Hasaka. Due to the war in Syria, Othman fled to Europe, where he began his career as a filmmaker. He participated in significant film productions and attended various film and screenplay workshops. During this phase, he wrote and directed six short films, two of which were presented at international festivals. For the past two years, Othman has been working on his first feature film, "The Journey," receiving support from the ScriptLAB Fiction and the ÖFI. In 2023, Othman obtained a start-up scholarship from MA7 for his new project "We have a world to unite."
