Wuqiao Circus
Storyline
In Wuqiao, a small Chinese town, the locals devote their lives to the circus. For decades, generations of circus performers have presented themselves as clowns, tamers, acrobats and magicians. During the Spring Festival holidays, Wuqiao Arcobatic World is transformed into a large playground for visiting families. Surrounded by Buddha temples and Taoist sculptures, a unique space of circus tradition, fantasy, illusion and reality is created. Wuqiao Circus, a film about fragments of circus life, performative existence and the love of playfulness.
About the film/director
Lukas Berger is a photographer and director.
He has worked in many countries countries worldwide and has a master's degree in documentary film directing (DocNomads). His short films Circus Debere Berhan (2015) and Circus Movements (2019) have been screened at many international film festivals and won several awards. They are photographic films that balance between static and dynamic, documentary and fiction, objectivity and poetry. His artistic work stems from a documentary photographic tradition and his great interest in the world and people is visible. Music and the use of sound play an important role, ranging from strict synchronicity to an atmosphere reminiscent of early cinema.
His new film, Wuqiao Circus (2020), depicts life in the circus city of Wuqiao in fascinating and immediate images.
