When the Fog Comes

Storyline

The short film Cuando llegue la neblina (When the fog comes) portrays the lives of people from the Mexican border town of Tijuana. In an interweaving of photographs, animations, and sound recordings, the film delves into the lives of four people who have different connections to the Mexican-American border. We get to know Isna and Miche, two migrants who fled Haiti and left their children and family behind in their home country. They took the arduous journey through eleven countries to Mexico to get a little closer to their dream of the "American Dream". We meet José Luís, a Mexican who, after eight failed border crossings, is now waiting for the next fog to try again. We meet Gustavo, a lifeguard who rescues migrants from the water when they try to swim around the border by the sea.

About the film/director

Laurentia Genske was born in Cologne in 1989. From 2010 to 2016, she studied documentary film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. As part of a KHM scholarship, she completed a year of study at EICTV, the International Film School in Cuba, in 2012. In addition to several short films, including EL MANGUITO, she made the feature-length documentaries AFUERA and AM KÖLNBERG during her studies, which were invited to renowned festivals. AM KÖLNBERG was released in German cinemas in March 2015 and won numerous awards, including the German Documentary Film Award. Her short film EL MANGUITO received the 3sat Förderpreis and the rating "particularly valuable" at the 63rd International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Her feature-length documentary ZU-HURS TÖCHTER was released in German cinemas in fall 2021 and won the German competition at DOK.fest Munich.
