Storyline

Regular beatings, nights locked up in the cellar. Alex's childhood in the Westphalian province was characterized by his father's constant violence. Images of classic masculinity, harshness, no room for compassion or vulnerability. The only moments of peace: family vacations on Norderney. It is precisely this place that Alex now travels to with his father 30 years later in order to finally understand: Dad, why all this?

About the film/director

Alexander Peiler (born 1984), Josua Zehner (born 1989) and Jonas Bomba (born 1990) are independent filmmakers from NRW. With their own film production company Cinephiles Films, they jointly produce feature films and documentaries that have been presented at many international film festivals and won awards. The three filmmakers are driven by the desire to find the real and the truthfulness that characterizes and drives a person and to process it on film in various forms. As part of the Aki T. Weisshaus collective, they shot and produced the autobiographical feature film SOMEHOW (46th Grenzland Filmtage Selb/German premiere, among others), in which the main character Alex, played by Alexander Peiler, embarks on a journey into his own past, shaped by the violence of his father. SOMEHOW was celebrated by the international trade press as a “jewel of underground cinema” and a “manifesto of independent film” and won numerous international awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Acting. VATER UND JAUST now deepens this search for answers with another journey. Alex and his father actually meet in front of the camera - and have to talk to each other.
