The rooms we share
Storyline
Hannah expected it would feel different to host a refugee in her home. She makes a great effort to provide a safe place for Yulia from the war in Ukraine. However, the two women remain strangers as Yulia's worries leave no space for new friendships. The silent discomfort grows so large that Hannah can no longer conceal it. From her honesty, a true moment of understanding emerges.
About the film/director
Although there is no sea in her home town of Kyiv, Nadiia has dreamed of becoming a sailor since childhood. That's why she dressed up for New Year's Eve in her grandfather's sailor's shirt, diving goggles and a daring moustache. In the theatre studio, Nadiia soon realised that she wasn't acting, she was directing. After school, she studied languages and literature. Then she didn't pick up a book for a year and went to sea - for a voluntary year at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven. It was there that she made her first films. After returning to Kiev, Nadiia studied directing at two film schools and made several short films and documentaries. She learned that the language of cinema was like a forgotten mother tongue for her. And she met people who looked like ships. These encounters were captured on the 35mm film of her consciousness. But she couldn't finish her studies because of the war. Now Nadiia is learning to develop this film at HMS and project it in the cinema. It reflects the beauty and ugliness of the world. Although the ship is damaged, with masts missing, sails torn and half under water, it continues to sail - even if it has to swim against the current.
