The Carp

Storyline

Ondrej faces a difficult test during Christmas: he is given the traditional task of killing a carp for the Christmas Eve feast by his mother-in-law. The nervous young man has no idea that the fish floating in the bathtub has its own plans for the strained family relations.

About the film/director

Jan Ryba (20. September 2001, Prague, CZ) graduated from Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) with his short film The Carp, which had its world premiere at the Canberra Short Film Festival. The Carp was nominated among the Top 20 Czech short films for the Czech Lion – Magnesia Award 2025.
Jan is currently studying in the master’s program at TBU. He is working on his master’s short film, in which he aims to mix genres, continuing the approach he explored in The Carp.
