Memories of the foreign
Storyline
How do we remember migration? How do we talk about the experiences, hopes and resistance of migrant workers? In the form of a cinematic memorial to his grandmother Fatma Selek, who migrated from Turkey to Austria in 1973, Tolga Karaaslan tells the personal story of his family's migration. Memories of the Foreign explores the memories of life in a foreign country and at the same time how people were turned into strangers and so-called others. The grandmother's Turkish voiceover accompanies the locations of her memories in Wels, which are shown in grainy black and white shots: Residential houses, a park bench, cars, a soccer field, a school, the gateway of a factory building, the facade of a company and a possible entrance to the grandparents' workplace.
