AOSHO! Voices in Bloom
Storyline
High schooler Shippei Iida moves with his mother from Tokyo to the remote island of Origoshima. Enrolling at the island’s only school, he struggles to adapt until encounters with his spirited classmates — and with Awano, a girl who quietly captures his heart — begin to open him up.
As Origoshima High faces a merger with a mainland school, a “choral exchange” is organized between the two student bodies. There, Shippei and his friends meet the charismatic choir captain of the mainland’s powerhouse school, whose dazzling voice both inspires and challenges them.
“Do you want the trophy, or do you want your friends?”
Caught between fragile kindness and youthful pride, Shippei clashes with those closest to him, creating painful rifts just as his bond with Awano begins to deepen.
Set against the quiet rhythms of island life, ”Aosho!” is a luminous coming-of-age drama where friendship, first love, and the soaring power of song intertwine.
About the film/director
Kyoji Yamaguchi (b. 1977, Miyazaki, Japan) is a Japanese director and writer whose artistic roots lie deeply in theater. For over fifteen years, he worked as an actor and stage director, creating productions that fused music, performance, and visual storytelling with distinctive energy.
He later transitioned to film through music videos, refining his sense of rhythm, space, and cinematic composition while continuing to bridge the expressive power of music with moving images.
In 2025, Yamaguchi made his feature directorial debut with "Aosho!", a youth drama set on a remote Japanese island where choir music becomes a universal language of connection. Released nationwide across 115 theaters in Japan, the film resonated strongly with audiences and marked him as a new filmmaker with a bold voice.
Yamaguchi’s vision is to bring the emotional immediacy of live performance into cinema, crafting works that feel both intimate and expansive. He seeks to weave the silent power of the stage with the soaring emotion of song, telling stories that speak across cultures and linger in memory.
Director’s statement
For me, ”Aosho!” is a celebration of the transformative power of song. In an age of digital isolation, music connects us in ways that words cannot. It creates true community, reminding us that we are never alone. With my debut feature, I wanted to capture how young people discover strength and belonging by raising their voices together.
My decade-long background in theater directing shaped the film’s unique style. I approached the camera as I would the stage, building space and rhythm with the immediacy of live performance. This hybrid approach allows audiences to feel the characters’ emotions not from a distance, but as if they are on the stage beside them.
The story unfolds on a remote Japanese island, where shifting seasons mirror the inner journeys of the characters. More than a tale of youth, love, and music, the film asks a universal question: how do we share our lives, and how do we support one another?
I believe this message—expressed through song and the beauty of cinema—can cross borders and resonate with hearts everywhere.
